This project got its start after I was digging around behind my parents garage and found table legs to our old dining room table. This was a 7′ table made together by my dad and his dad. To my surprise, the legs seemed to be in decent condition, unfortunately the table top was pretty warped. Instead of having to “weather” a project, or paint it to look vintage, this piece was weathered naturally… it lived outdoors for years! The epitome of Relatively Vintage.

I started just by sanding to see what was under all of the old finish. Started to strip with 80 grit sand paper and polished the pieces up with 220 grit.

Some of the pieces were a little wiggly, structurally everything is okay, I just dabbed a bit of wood glue in the cracks and sanded down any of the glue that dried outside of the cracks.

Wow! I chose Provincial stain by Minwax and what a difference it has made! This color has reminded me so much of how it looked when I was growing up.

This table top is one foot longer than the old one and a bit thinner. It will need to be trimmed down by a foot. This MasterCraft Edge Glued Spruce took two coats of stain to match the darkness of the legs. I brushed the stain on with a paintbrush. Normally I like to wipe stain on and off with a rag but I really wanted this color to take on this raw wood.
My dad added a trim to the edge of the table top and polyurethaned the whole thing! It has been refinished to last many more years in my new little family.
Here was it’s debut in our home at Christmastime. I couldn’t be happier!
